TradeStation Support

We love TradeStation. Sunny uses TradeStation to trade. Sam's and Sunny's books were written with and about TradeStation and EasyLanguage.

Nevertheless, recent changes in their corporate structure have led to TS not answering the telephones and rather relying on Chat Sessions, that take hours to get to your question.

To help users with ordinary questions, we have initiated TradeStation Support for a very reasonable per 5-minute block. Most questions can be answered in that time.

I had a caller not too long ago who needed to know how to restore TradeStation from backup. We spent 20 minutes on the phone and a remote viewer app so I could work on his computer, and I taught him how to do it and we did it together. He had waited 3 hours online for TS to help him to no avail. Needless to say he thought it was well worth the $100 he spent to make the rescue.

If you need help with TradeStation, give Sunny a call. If you have a more esoteric question she can field the call to her "sources" to get it solved. In any case, we'll be faster than waiting on hold.

If you want to explain your problem first through the following form, please feel free to do so. Be sure to leave your email and phone number and we'll get it taken care of.

Questions and Answers

Q: How do I change the color of the Data Window to match my Background?
A:

While on a Chart choose Settings > Preferences > Display > DataTips: and then check  Use Windows system colors for the DataTip

Q: How many symbols can I have in a RadarScreen Window?
A: 2000. And then it runs slower. Or, if you have any indicator on the RS that requires history you can only have 1 ,000.
Q: What in Heaven's name is MaxBarsBack?
A: MaxBarsBack ("The maximum number of bars study will reference") is how many bars BACKWARDS into the past will a study need to reverence. "Close > Close [01]" requires a MaxBarsBack no less than one. "Value1 = Average (Close, 07)" requires a MaxBarsBack value of at least seven. Close crosses above Average (Close, 07) requires a MaxBarsBack value of at least eight because it requires the average of one bar ago (07 + 01 = 08). Generally, MaxBarsBack is left at the default of setting of 50 because, at the time EasyLangauge was created, a 50 period Moving Average was about as far back as most persons looked. Today 200 may be used frequently but often it is worth the effort to calculate that without using, and adjusting, the MaxBarsBack buffer. Changing the MaxBarsBack setting in the midst of an optimization cycle means you have altered the data set used for previous decisions so I always advise going back to square one and starting the cycle over with the new MaxBarsBack setting / data set.
Q: I got a warning, something about MaxBarsForward. What does that mean?
A: There is a setting, I believe on the "Window" settings dialog, for "bars to the right. If you want to extend your reach into the future - offsetting a Plot to the right, drawing a TrendLine, etc - then the "Bars to the right" setting must be large enough to encompass that reach/stretch.

Q: The TSEL (TradeStation EasyLanguage) reserved word "EntryPrice" definition is ambiguous. I thought it would give me the actual entry price so I would know the actual fill price instead of what the strategy calculates should be the fill price. It doesn't appear to do that. Also the TS function "SetProfitTarget" also seems to work off the strategy-calculated fill price, not the actual fill price. I liked using the SetProfitTarget function because it could execute a fill on the same bar as the entry. TSEL doesn't allow us to program something differently. Is there a way to know the actual fill in a strategy?
A: All of the Classic EasyLanguage trading engine runs off the fill assumptions... I assume your Historical entries are not in question? Let's go back a second, if you are at the right edge of the chart (real time) and if you tell the Strategy (Properties for all) to "Strategy will fill non-historical orders only when the TradeManager reports them as filled." then yes, indeed, I would expect the EntryPrice to be accurate. As far as "a way to know the actual fill" the answer is "Yes." and involves using one or more of "StrategyHost", "PositionsProvider" and/or "OrdersProvider". As I am just now delving into some of these questions I do not have a definitive answer at this moment. Yeah, I looked in the Dictionary and StrategyHost is probably (most definitely) the best choice.
Q: The "Data Tips" (yes, I already know about the Data Window) is difficult to read, how can I make it more legible?
A: Click Settings, "Display" tab, in "DataTips" section enable "Use Windows system colors for the DataTip"
Q: What is the symbol for the VIX?
A: $VIX.X
